Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society

Overview

The Noetic Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group with members in Southern California and around the world, who have been inspired to study Homer, Parmenides, the pre-Socratics, Plato, the neo-Platonists, and other perennial philosophers and mystics, not for academic reasons, but for personal spiritual growth. The society was founded by Pierre Grimes, PhD in 1967, and was incorporated in 1978.

Synopsis Nice review and continuation of yesterday evening's (un-recorded) chat with Pierre at the Women's Club about the necessity for the philosophy of the Self. Much of the discussion focuses on the place for "Logos", and the special Platonic meaning of the terms, "Justice", and the post-midwife-talk experience (after one sees how a pathologos plays out in their family in a past scene, etc.). Synopsis Another fun Saturday morning with Pierre. We warmed up with a little politics, and a discussion of how to break people (especially Trump-ites, but also entire societies) out of their heavy “belief” states. Then we dive into two dream explorations with JulieH and Eldar. (I was exhausted, so again, just an audio and some snapshots today, no video.) JulieH's dream exploration starts at about 0:34:15 (where I deleted about 10 minutes of silence while Pierre and the group read over her...

Dialogue(s): parmenides Chapters: hyp4 Synopsis Pierre leads another great Friday night discussion with the NS. He opens with the query: Given the countless amount of suffering, what kind of universe (or Cosmos) do we live in that would allow for that? And why? Given that this suffering is a natural consequence of the pathologos: what is the purpose of allowing pathologos? Depending on the answer we get, then what can we conclude? (We all try various answers which are basically variations on...

Synopsis Pierre leads us through this one-day, 3-session seminar exploring the dimension of the Self and the Logos in Plato's thought. The Self is both profoundly personal and transcendent since it is both the experiencer and the experienced. To realize this, Pierre leads us into the thought of Plato's Phaedrus for the union of the theme of love and the Logos. The path to its realization is seen to be joined with its source within the Self because it is through the inspired role of reflection...

Synopsis Pierre starts us back into Homer's Iliad again. He begins by asking what it is we are looking for in the Iliad? And why did it gain the status among the Greeks of a sacred scripture? He has us think about focusing on the turn-about of Achilles, the roles of gods and men, and the significance, if any, of the idea of self, myself, selves, etc. It is on this last point that we spend most of the session, collecting all the quotes (from the Balboa translation) where self ('αυτο') is...
